A home is so much more than merely the house you live in. A home represents a way of life, a style, personality—in short, a home represents YOU.

So, while building a home can be rather straightforward, designing the spaces within can feel daunting. Some of us are born influencers—but others need a little direction. If this is you, rest easy. We’re in this together, and we can point you in the right direction.

YOUR HOME, YOUR STYLE, YOUR WAY

Finding Inspiration

As with any big project—the best place to start is with inspiration.

This is when you get to channel your interior Johanna Gaines, make mood boards, buy magazines and cut out pictures that you like. Jot down colors that make you smile, themes that feel comfortable—and most important—write down what you want out of your home. Function is often an overlooked category of design—but it is vital that your home allows you to do the things that matter most, whether that’s cooking a 5-star meal, gardening in the backyard, or bathing three golden retrievers in the laundry room.

If you’re a Pinterest star, create boards for every room in the home. Need help? Adair Homes has inspiration for you! Check out our inspiration photos and 2021 Interior Design Trends boards.

Still a little lost?

Try taking an online ‘Style Quiz’ like this one.

Color me, Stylish!

Color says everything.

From smart and sexy, to classic and modern—a color palette can say it all. Selecting finishes that advance your desired design is key to a finished product that represents you

Not a color genius? Our Design Department is happy to help you create a color scheme that works well throughout the entire home. Flooring, countertops, cabinets, wall color and tile accents should create a cohesive (but not boring!) flow through the home. Some interior designers call these ‘Mood Boards’. It’s a great way to visualize the colors that will flow through your custom home.

But Where Will I Sit?

Now to the furniture. Although we’ve all dreamed of a new home with an entirely new display of furnishings, there’s a strong possibility that you’ll be moving into your new home with existing furniture. Consider the finishes. Are you happy with the style? If not, is there a way to paint, re-texture, or update the upholstery to a style that better suits you? Do it!

And meanwhile, if there are items you need to buy—here are some tips:

Start with the rug. Think of a rug as an enormous central art piece. The color and style can’t help but dictate the rest of the space. Accent pieces, such as throw pillows and blankets, should be in coordinating colors and of interesting textures.

The bigger the rug the better! If the rug doesn’t reach the span of the room it has a shrinking effect and makes the room look smaller. See the diagram below for some rug size guides:

Try to keep your furniture legs similar. If your couch has oak feet, think about oak feet on the chairs, and so on. Similar stains and, or metalwork creates cohesion.

Incorporate a variety of shapes - for example, if you have a lot of square furniture, try mixing in a round mirror, or a chair with a rounded back to create more visual interest.

Create some contrast! If your kitchen finishes are all light and neutral colors, consider counter stools in a dark color or complementary color.

Use texture to create interest. Monotone designs can be enlivened through exciting textures through a space. Leather, velvet, linen—all provide depth and interest in a room, even if displaying the same color.

Art-it-up. Fabulous art is affordable! Homegoods, Nordstrom Rack, and World Market all showcase a curated selection of artwork that is affordable, relatable, and transitions well through spaces both modern and rustic. Consider your color scheme, your design aesthetic—and then, ask yourself: DO YOU LOVE IT? Art is a great way to express personality in a home.

Pop Quiz, Decorator!

Does your home feel comfortable? Are you at rest in your spaces? Do you feel invigorated? The answer to all these questions should be a resounding YES. This new custom home is all about YOU.

Maybe your style doesn’t have an official ‘word’ to describe it—well, then—pick your own! Modern Country Upstyle. Contemporary ArtHouse. Uptown Rustic Cabin! You never know. You may be creating the future of interior design.

What’s for certain: if you are choosing items that you love, your home will naturally come together to reflect your unique style and personality.
