Spring is the time of year when homeowners get the urge to freshen up the look of their home. As the weather warms up, it’s natural to want to do a deep clean, get rid of some of the clutter, and maybe even spice up the look of your home. Luckily, each of these tasks is relatively cheap and easy—and there’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to completely change the feeling of a home!

It is fascinating to watch how paint color trends evolve over the years. Just like fashion and home design, our collective tastes gradually change, and it can be fun to incorporate a new color into your home. You might be surprised how a fresh palette in your living room or kitchen, throughout your bathroom, or on your home’s exterior can make the house feel brand new.

Let’s take a look at some of the top paint color trends for 2018:

International Influences

One big color trend comes from a sense of adventure and exploration. These bold tones are inspired by far-flung cultures, artisanal crafts, and unique indigenous patterns. Just imagine what a rich, memorable color could do to one of the rooms in your home. You might add a spicy accent wall with Sherwin Williams Rustic Red (SW 7593) or refresh your kitchen with an adventurous hue like Sherwin Williams’ Oceanside (SW 496). You won’t believe the difference these types of globally inspired colors will have.

Futuristic Colors

Technology has permeated nearly every part of our lives, so it comes as no surprise that paint designers are gaining inspiration from high-tech visions of the not-too-distant future. We’re seeing this in colors like Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet (PANTONE 18-3838), a deep, intriguing shade that feels ultra-modern and a little cosmic. It’s also why black interior paint has once again become popular. Another popular color is Sherwin Williams Outerspace paint (SW 6251), which can give a futuristic, space like feeling to any room.

Serenity and Calm

While the above trends are great for homeowners who want a vibrant accent wall or who aren’t shy about painting an entire room an eye-popping color, others will appreciate the simplicity of this last trend. This year, there’s a renewed love of quiet, soothing, almost minimalistic colors and decor. It seems that as homeowners’ lives become increasingly busy and cluttered with information, they’re craving simple, serene colors throughout their common areas, bedrooms, and even bathrooms.

It’s no wonder why many homeowners are gravitating toward calm, hushed hues, such as muted earth tones and hazy greys. A popular choice is Sherwin Williams Silver Strand (SW 7057) Another is SW Worldly Gray, a sandy-colored neutral that promises to make your furniture pop.

Finding Your Perfect Palette

As you contemplate this year’s paint color trends, always keep in mind that your own personal style is the most important. Overarching trends come and go, but what works for you and your home is a very individual choice. Of course, colors like these can be incredibly fun and inspiring—and a great place to start when you’re ready to spice up your home.

Above all, remember that choosing paint colors should be an exciting opportunity to express your style. In fact, this step is often one of our customers’ favorite parts of the custom homebuilding process. During the home design stage, they love the chance to visit an Adair Homes design center to choose their finishes from a selection of options provided by an interior designer. This includes selecting paint colors for each room and the exterior of the home—choices that really start to make a custom home feel like their own.
