The East Valley of Arizona is perfect for those interested in building a custom home in the larger urban setting of Tempe or in one of the city’s many quieter suburbs. Either way, the East Valley provides access for those interested in all the excitement of a city as well as the beauty of the outdoors, which Arizona has a lot of.

Whether you have decided to settle in the East Valley to grow professionally in one of the many cities, start a business in a smaller suburb, or enjoy the 300 days of sunshine that Arizona has to offer, the East Valley is a unique region of the state that is great for families, individuals, and retirees alike.

While this is not an exhaustive list of the East Valley’s municipalities, here are some options that vary from one another:

  • Tempe
  • Scottsdale
  • Fountain Hills
  • Queen Creek

To help you decide, let's take a closer look at some of the best areas to find land in the East Valley of Arizona.

Tempe

Once a resort city and now a lively metropolis, Tempe offers a laid-back atmosphere compared to Phoenix’s bustling urban environment. In many ways, that’s what makes Tempe a great place to call home. You’ll find great food, many outdoor activities, warm and welcoming neighborhoods, and a vibrant arts scene without the unpleasant busyness of Phoenix.

Tempe is continuing to grow with companies either moving or starting and attracting young professionals. It has a booming job market with major industries of healthcare, biotechnology, technology, advanced manufacturing, tourism, and business services.

On top of that, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is only 20 minutes west, making travel easily accessible. But while you’re in Tempe, you’ll have access to many cafes and restaurants around Arizona State University, kayaking on the Tempe Town Lake, biking in Papago Park, visiting the ASU Art Museum, or catching a show at the ASU Gammage, a historic performing arts theater designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

If you want a laid-back city with plenty of options when you’re feeling up to it, Tempe is the city for you.

Scottsdale

Scottsdale is no longer just a hub for golfers. Over the last few decades, the city has provided its residents with abundant amenities, including outdoor activities, sports events for participation or viewing, a thriving downtown and waterfront, and a business environment that is partially defined by its close proximity to the area’s international airport.

Despite Scottsdale’s reputation as being a place for retirees, the city has plenty of young families. This is in part because of its school districts that consistently rank among the top in the state. Scottsdale can also boast about its art scene. The city has a wide array of galleries and studios and ranks among the top art markets in the country. Besides its thriving art scene, the city has plenty to offer in terms of shopping and nightlife. On top of that, residents enjoy a mild climate, even in the summer.

Fountain Hills

Now, let’s jump into the East Valley’s options for small-town living. Offering an escape to locals and visitors alike, Fountain Hills has great charm. The town offers spectacular year-round outdoor recreation, art and wine festivals, live music, and cultural celebrations. Residents also have access to world-class health care at the Mayo Clinic.

Fountain Hills is located within close proximity to the greater Phoenix metro area, which gives residents a chance to visit some of the best golf courses in the state, the scenic views and trails of the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and Tonto National Forest’s Saguaro Lake and Canyon Lake, and travel by way of the international airport in the area.

Queen Creek

Queen Creek is one of the most family-friendly towns in the region and offers enjoyable, comfortable living for people of all ages. However, the median age is 33, which makes it a great place for young families to grow with the thriving community. Queen Creek has done some of its own growing: Over the past decade, the town has nearly doubled its population.

Residents of Queen Creek enjoy plenty of outdoor time throughout the entire year. San Tan Mountain Regional Park has more than 10,000 acres of desert landscape. Families love going on hikes, taking mountain bike rides, or simply wandering around looking at the various wildlife.
