Find me on:

The holidays are fast approaching, which for many people means spending quality time with family. Whether you have tried-and-true traditions or like to try something new every year, there is plenty to do in the Spokane area while everybody is together for a few days. These are just a few examples of the family-friendly fun you can have this holiday season:

Shop Til You Drop

Downtown Spokane has everything you need to get your last-minute holiday shopping done festively, including lights, carolers, Santa, and fun activities for the whole family. The theme for 2017 is Rudolph, so keep an eye out for this red-nosed reindeer while you hunt for the perfect gift. Kids can even participate in a scavenger hunt to find the 25 Rudolphs that will be hidden throughout the downtown area—and win prizes.

Winter is also a great time to wander through holiday bazaars, River Park Square, pop-up shops, and other shopping events.

Give Back to the Community

If your family enjoys volunteering together, there are several options in the Spokane area. Volunteer Spokane provides a comprehensive list of volunteering opportunities for the holiday season, including activities like:

  • Meal programs
  • Clothing drives
  • Contributing to wish lists
  • Gift wrapping

Of course, you can also contact your favorite local nonprofit or religious organization to ask what you can do to help this holiday season.

Explore the Great Outdoors

If you’re a nature-loving family, the Spokane area has a lot to offer in terms of outdoor activities. Take a winter snowshoe hike, strap on your cross-country skis, or explore the snowmobile trails in Riverside State Park. The John A. Finch Arboretum is not just for enjoyment in warm weather. The 65-acre park has year-round activities and self-guided walking tours through thousands of labeled plants, including conifers and a rhododendron glen.

If you simply want to enjoy being outside, take a horse and carriage ride through the streets of downtown Spokane. You can sip hot chocolate and cozy up with the kids while you take in the lights and festive atmosphere.

Get Merry with Music

The holidays just wouldn’t be merry without music, and Spokane has dozens of opportunities for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you gather in your own neighborhood to sing Christmas carols or see holiday favorites like Mannheim Steamroller or the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the holidays would not be complete without some festive tunes.

Test New Holiday Recipes

Holiday mealtimes are perfect for making new happy memories, and cooking together is a fun family activity that can be done from the comfort of your own gourmet kitchen. Make holiday cookies with the little ones, try a new recipe you saw on your favorite cooking show, or just gather in the kitchen to chat while the family chef works some magic.

You can also find holiday cooking classes in the Spokane area to learn anything from creative ways to use leftovers to great recipes for treat gifts.

Plan Your Dream Home

The holidays are a great time to talk about the future. Having everybody together gives you the opportunity to talk about plans for the years to come. Whether you plan to expand your family, invest in a vacation home, or merge families into a multi-generational home, having the right space is essential. If you have thought about building a new home, this year take the time to explore floor plans, talk about the features you want or need, and think about your budget.

After the busy holiday season is over, you’ll have all the information you need to talk to a Home Ownership Counselor about your dream home in the Spokane area.
