Find me on:

With the start of every year, exciting new trends emerge in the world of custom home design. Some come and go before they ever truly take hold, while others are able to stand the test of time.

Custom homebuilders enjoy the luxury of selecting their own finishes, such as fixtures, paint colors, and cabinetry, which makes monitoring the new trends even more exciting. However, the trick is to look for trends that will last—and even add value to your home.

As Lorri Dunn, exclusive Interior Designer for Adair Homes, explains, “It’s important to me to be able to provide our customers with products that are high-quality and thoughtfully designed. For the customer, finding what is ‘trending’ shouldn’t be about fads. It should be about finding those new trends that will add long-term value in the home.”

So what 2017 trends are poised to stand the test of time, while also adding value to your new home? Let’s take a look at our top eight:

  1. Gray subway tile. The traditional look of white subway tile is getting a more modern twist with new gray tones. In kitchens, bathrooms, and beyond, the result is a clean, classic finish but with a bit more visual interest than white.
  2. Farmhouse sinks. Spacious and functional, farmhouse sinks are continuing to grow in popularity. They come in quite a few colors and materials and offer a beautifully timeless look that suits nearly any style of kitchen.
  3. Floorte. Floorte is luxury vinyl flooring that creates a beautiful and durable alternative to hardwood, tile, or laminate floors. The tiles are available in more than 60 style and color combinations, and their incredibly resilient design makes them ideal for high-traffic rooms, busy families with kids, and even pet lovers.
  4. Painted cabinets. More homeowners are embracing the irresistible flexibility and fresh look of painted cabinets. From classic white to sleek neutrals to stylish gray, they allow you many more options for customizing your kitchen and bathrooms. Plus, if you want to update the colors a few years down the road, a new paint job is simple and affordable.
  5. Craftsman exteriors. Rich with handworked details and natural materials, the Craftsman style exudes a feeling of coziness, comfort, and home. The style should be a favorite in the Pacific Northwest for decades to come, with its large front porches and dormer windows that are a perfect fit for our scenic forests and coastlines.
  6. Motion-activated faucets. Hands-free faucets, like the Moen MotionSense faucet, are also trending, because they offer several key benefits in a stylish, contemporary design. The motion-activated faucets make everyday tasks faster and easier, while also helping you keep the faucet clean and prevent the spread of germs.
  7. Formal dining rooms. Many families are looking to make the most of dinnertime, game night, and all the special moments in between. It’s no wonder formal dining rooms are making a comeback, allowing families to share some quality time without the distraction of the TV. This is another perk of choosing to build a custom home—you get to decide what type of dining room suits your family best. For example, many of our customizable floor plans, such as The Cascades and The Mt. Rainier, feature formal dining rooms that are separate from the main living area.
  8. Timeless, neutral paint tones. Finally, we’re seeing a shift back toward classic shades of taupe on both interiors and exteriors. Taupe is a bit warmer than the popular grays of the last several years, and it comes in just about every tone you can imagine. A great compromise between the warmth of taupe and the cool of gray is Sherwin-Williams’ Color of the Year, Poised Taupe, a gorgeous addition to any room of the house.

Are you excited to start planning out the unique floor plan and on-trend finishes that will make your custom home truly yours?
