These are exciting times. You’re getting ready to build a custom home that you’ll live in and love for years to come. You may be wondering just how to build a custom home, what you need to do first, and if it’s even something you can afford.

Here at Adair Homes, we specialize in creating affordable dream homes. Plus, we honestly believe that building a custom home should be fun and easy. After all, you’re turning that dream home into a reality and, with our help, the process can be broken down into five easy, doable steps. Let’s look at the steps to get you closer to your dream home:

Make a List

A blank page may seem terrifying at first, but we recommend that you start by answering this simple question: what would you love in your new home?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • An energy efficient design
  • Floor to ceiling windows
  • Chef’s kitchen
  • Master bedroom on the main floor
  • Split floor plan
  • An enclosed patio
  • A mother-in-law suite
  • Neighborhood walkability
  • A side garage

That’s just the tipping point. Unleash your imagination and give yourself the permission to go along with it. Have fun here. Who says you can’t have a walk in master closet that looks like a Beverly Hills boutique or a decked out man cave that looks like a replica of the Starship Enterprise? Here’s your chance to dream big.

Don’t worry about getting too outlandish here. As you craft your wish list, you’ll start to recognize the features that are most important to you. This is a powerful starting point.

Attend Open Houses

Don’t you just love open houses? An open house can expand your ideas of what’s possible. We recommend touring as many open houses as time permits. Check out our custom built open homes to get fresh ideas of what you want and need from a home.

Here’s a pro tip: bring your camera or smartphone and take plenty of photos and videos of your home tour. This will allow you to look at the home later and see the features you may have missed. You’ll also be able to share these images with your friends and family to bounce ideas off of them.

Get Organized

It’s time to get organized with your ideas but don’t worry, it’s not hard at all. Start by downloading our free design guide which includes tips and tools for creating a custom home you’ll love. We’ll walk you step by step through the organization process, so that you corral all of your hopes, dreams, needs and wants into one comprehensive folder.

We also recommend starting a Pinterest board, if you don’t already have one. Be sure to follow us and start pinning (i.e. collecting) photos that embody your home wishlist and incorporate what you’ve seen at the open houses.

Research Home Builders Online

Go with the home builder that you love. We’re crossing our fingers that you’ll choose Adair Homes.

Whoever you choose, make sure you do thorough research online. It’s so crucial to understand the home builder’s process so you’ll know what to expect and when. Check out all of the floor plans to see which plans answer all of your needs and wants. Read up on customer testimonials to see what actual homebuyers thought of the custom building process or even follow along as they go up with the customer blogs!

We also recommend asking questions. Here at Adair Homes, you won’t even have to pick up your phone to ask a question. Just click Live Chat to be connected during business hours. We’ll answer all of your questions.

Schedule an Appointment

Now you’re ready to take the next step. It’s time to schedule a face to face meeting. We’re excited to show you how we can turn all of your dreams into an affordable reality. During our meeting, we’ll help you select the perfect floor plan, you’ll learn about the financing process, and together we’ll start designing a custom home you’ll love.
