When you build a custom home there are lots of exciting design decisions to make. So many that it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Not to worry. Our Custom Home Design 101 Guides offer practical information to help you decide what’s best for the look you want in your home. Like choosing the right flooring.

Adair Homes is proud to partner with Shaw Floors, one of the most trusted names in flooring, to provide high-quality materials and installation in every Adair Home. Here are some practical tips that our partners at Shaw recently shared with our team. We’re sharing them with you to make it easier for you to select the right flooring for your own dream home.

Carpet or Hardwood?

Hard surfaces such as hardwood, laminate, and tile can be a great addition to some areas of the home, but many of our customers still prefer the value and comfort of carpet.

There are several advantages to carpet, including:

  • It’s softer and warmer under your feet on cold winter mornings
  • Carpet actually captures many common odors and pollutants until you vacuum them out and this may contribute to a better indoor air quality than hard surfaces
  • Carpet is a great value compared to other flooring choices
  • Adair Homes carries Shaw carpet which is made in the USA

In addition to the value and comfort it provides, carpet also absorbs sound better than hard surfaces. This makes it an excellent choice for bedrooms, home offices, bonus rooms, game rooms and loft areas.

How to Choose the Right Carpet

There are two primary types of carpets for best performance in high-traffic areas: nylon and polyester. Nylon is resilient and “bounces back” well. If you think about an indentation that a chair may leave on your carpet, nylon is the fiber that will bounce back best to the carpet’s original shape. Nylon is typically less stain resistant naturally so it is treated for longer life and wear.

Polyester is more flexible and is more naturally stain resistant. However, both are excellent choices for high-traffic areas in your home.

When choosing a carpet there are a few factors to consider:

  • Weight: How many ounces of fiber in one square foot of carpet (the more the better)
  • Twist: A tighter twist is a sign of a higher quality carpet
  • Density: the denser the carpet, the longer it will last
  • Fiber: polyester or nylon

Every Adair Home comes standard with Shaw polyester carpet. We also offer upgrade carpet selections that might be a good choice if you need:

  • Additional stain protection
  • A specific style or color
  • More durability for specific areas of your home

What About Stains?

Cheaper carpets will look dirty and matted faster than higher quality carpets. That’s because of a process known as scouring. During the manufacturing process, carpet will attract an oily coating. Scouring is the process of extracting the oil from your carpet before it is shipped for installation. Some manufacturers may skip this step to save money and these non-scoured carpets are shipped to consumers.

Shaw scours all carpets before shipment so your carpet can handle day-to-day traffic and still wear beautifully over time.

Most Shaw carpets also include R2X, a patented, proprietary process that protects many of the carpets we offer.

Here are some advantages of the R2X system:

  • Combines stain and soil resistance
  • Provides superior stain resistance through total fiber coverage
  • Continues to protect, even after repeated cleanings
  • Exceptional soil resistance and cleanability

Unlike untreated carpets, which can absorb stains into the fibers of your carpet, with the R2X system most spills will bead up on the top of the carpet where they can easily be cleaned with a simple blotting. The R2X system that is included with many Shaw carpets makes your home more livable with less to worry about.

The Fido-Friendly Flooring Choice

Want to see one of our friendly Shaw partners get really excited? Ask them about Lifeguard, the newest technology in carpets. If you own pets, you’re sure to be excited as well.

Lifeguard is a carpet with a completely waterproof backing. Most carpets include a primary and a secondary backing that is glued together. When an area of carpet gets wet, the moisture seeps down into the backing and starts to come apart.

Lifeguard is the first carpet to come with a completely waterproof backing so your carpet can stand up to anything Fido might put it through. Shaw is the only company to carry Lifeguard and it is available as an upgrade in any Adair Home.

What About the Environment?

Have you ever wondered what happens to old carpet that is torn out? Maybe you’ve thought that there is no use for old, dirty carpet or maybe you’ve heard it can pile up in landfills.

Shaw is the only carpet manufacturer that recycles old carpet into beautiful new carpet. In fact, their Anso Eco Nylon brand consists of 25% recycled carpet. Old carpet is shaved and melted down at the company’s plant in Ringgold, GA and repurposed into pristine new carpet.

How Long Will it Last?

All Shaw carpets come with industry-leading warranties. In addition, the new LifeGuard carpet comes with additional protection including a lifetime warranty for:

  • Waterproof backing
  • Stain and soil protection
  • No wrinkle - protection against and “bubbling” from your carpet
  • No delamination - protection from the backing coming off your carpet
  • Tuft bind - protection against the fibers being pulled out of your carpet

Now that you know all about carpets, it’s time to really have some fun. Stop by a Sales Center where you can browse carpet samples in almost every style and color. A Home Ownership Consultant will be happy to answer any questions that you have.
